And before that, on Friday 5th April, there is a 10-bell practice for the Ely DA at St Neots, ringing from 8 - 9.15 pm. This is arranged by Alan Winter, Vice-Chairman of the Ely DA, and anyone who would like to ring on 10 bells is welcome. If you are not already on Alan's mailing list, and you would like to be informed about these practices, please contact Alan on vicechair_at_elyda.org.uk.

There will be an 8-bell quarter peal attempt on 20th April 2013 at St Mary's, Ely, at either 7 or 7.30 pm (to be confirmed which one). Roderick has set up a Doodle poll on http://doodle.com/xc6bd439eqax4eca where you can indicate if you are available. We hope to ring Lincolnshire Surprise Major. For any other information or suggestions, please contact Roderick on rmj_at_ast.cam.ac.uk.

There will be an 8-bell quarter peal attempt on 18th May 2013 at Longstanton, starting at 10.am. Please contact Roderick on rmj_at_ast.cam.ac.uk with any requests or suggestions.

District Striking Competition - 1st June at Stretham, draw at 6 pm prompt. This is a friendly competition for Sunday Service bands at towers within the Ely district, though you can 'borrow' one ringer in case only five ringers from your band can make it on the day. There is a Method section and a Call Change section - in this section, no more than three ringers may have already rung a quarter peal of a Surprise method on a working bell. In recent years, ringers with less than a year's experience of ringing have been included in a successful Call Change band. Do come along to the Striking Competition, even if your tower can't enter a complete team. If time permits, scratch teams can also enter though they cannot be awarded a trophy. There will be refreshments, handbells and a quiz during the evening, and we will hold a short business meeting. The full rules are on the Ely District website at http://ely.elyda.org.uk/district-information/district-striking-competitions. For more information, or any queries, please contact me.

Young Ringers' Event - 22nd June
The Ely and Cambridge Districts of the Ely Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers are holding a Young Ringers' Event. It will be at Little Eversden (6, 7cwt) and Orwell (8, 11cwt) on Sat June 22, starting at 2:30 pm (subject to final confirmation from the towers). There will be tower bell ringing, handbell ringing and refreshments - and anything else you would like to suggest. Alan Winter will be Ringing Master. The purpose of the event is to encourage young ringers (up to approx 18 years old), of all abilities by giving them the opportunity to ring and socialise with each other. Please do encourage your young ringers to attend, even if they are not members of the Ely DA. They are also welcome to bring along friends who are interested in learning to ring.
If you have any queries, please contact Barbara Le Gallez, blegallez_at_yahoo.co.uk, 01223 860283.

Tower open day - 29th June
We are holding a tower open day at St Mary's, Ely on 29th June from 10.30 am - 2.30 pm. The objective of this event is to raise wider awareness of the cultural and historical significance of church bell ringing amongst people of all ages living in towns and villages within the Ely District area.
Outside St Mary's there will be various exhibits including the Association's Mobile Bell, the new Association Display Boards, and a mini-ring. The aim will be to attract people up the tower to see the bells and into the ringing chamber where more ringers will be on hand to let them try backstrokes under supervision. People showing interest and aptitude will be encouraged to start learning to ring at their most convenient church. Refreshments will be available in the St Mary's church room.
The organisers will be very grateful for volunteers wishing to lend a hand on the day, either helping with ringing demonstrations, 'working the crowd', or organising refreshments. Please contact Phil Bailey in the first instance on 07968 788425 or email billythebellringer_at_yahoo.co.uk. If you could display a poster in your village or advertise the event in any other way, please contact Peter Binns on 01353 649428 or e-mail pro_at_ely.org.uk. January 2013

posted 7 Jan 2013, 01:14 by Janet Garnett   [ updated 15 Jan 2013, 08:13 ]

Dear All,

Happy New Year, and best wishes for 2013. Here is the first online update of 2013 with some dates for your diaries and other information.

The Ely District ADM was held at Burwell yesterday. All the District officers and committee were relected at the ADM, with the exception of the Education Officer. Dee Smith is standing down as District Education Officer, and the ringing masters (Philip Bailey and Roderick Johnstone) will look after education in the district for this year. They are planning follow-up events for the successful Plain Hunt/Plain Bob Doubles and Glasgow courses run last year, so please contact either of them for more details.

The ringing programme for the Ely District was presented at the ADM, and a paper copy is on its way to every active tower in the district. There is a late addition to the programme, made after these copies were distributed.. In August, we are now ringing at Haddenham from 5 - 6 pm and then at Wilburton from 6.30 - 8 pm. Please let me know if you would like another copy of the programme; I can send a paper one, or I can email an electronic version if you would prefer it in that form.

The next district meeting is on Saturday 2nd February at Chatteris, ringing from 3 - 5 pm then tea.

Issue 69 of Striking Features was distributed at the ADM, and a copy is on its way to every district member, via the tower correspondants. If your tower copies do not arrive then let me know and I will try to find out where they have got to. Issue 69 is a bumper, 16 page issue and is also the last. The role of Striking Features in communicating with district members is now taken over by the new Ely District website at

https://sites.google.com/site/elydistrictbells

Please have a look at the website, and send any general comments or suggestions to me as District Secretary. We welcome news items and articles for publication on the website - please send those to Sue Marsden (chatringer_at_gmail.com) as she is transferring from Striking Features editor to website editor.

8-bell ringing: In 2013, Roderick Johnstone as Assistant Ringing Master proposes to continue to arrange 8-bell quarter peal attempts on the 3rd Saturday in the month, in a similar format to last year. The ringing will be arranged for the morning, afternoon or evening as convenient for the tower and the ringers.

There will be an 8-bell quarter peal attempt on 19th January 2013 at Swaffham Bulbeck. Roderick has set up a Doodle poll on http://doodle.com/xc6bd439eqax4eca where you can indicate your preferred time for the quarter peal. For any other information or suggestions, please contact Roderick on rmj_at_ast.cam.ac.uk.

10-bell ringing: Alan Winter, who is Vice-Chairman of the Ely DA, arranges 10-bell practices for the Ely DA as a whole. Anyone who would like to ring on 10 bells is welcome. There is a regular arrangement of a practice at St Neots on the first Friday in the month. Alan is also hoping to arrange a practice at Soham in January, but this is awaiting confirmation from the tower. If you are not already on Alan's mailing list, and you would like to be informed about these practices, please contact Alan on vicechair_at_elyda.org.

Belfry Maintenance workshop, Stretham, Saturday 2nd March 9 am - 1.30 pm
Philip Bailey, as Education Officer for the Ely DA, is arranging a belfry maintenance workshop for the Association as a whole in our district on Saturday 2nd March. Tom Ridgman will lead the workshop, which will be based at Stretham, starting with registration at 9 am, and also visit Haddenham for a contrasting bell installation. Numbers are strictly limited, and Phil will arrange another workshop later in the year if this one is over-subscribed. Please contact Phil (billythebellringer_at_yahoo.co.uk) as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this workshop.

Handbell Concert, Stretham 13th Jan 2013. Peter Binns sends the following invitation:
'HANDBELLS BY CANDLELIGHT - St James Church, Stretham 7.00pm Sunday 13 January 2013

Make a date in your diary for this uplifting concert of music and change-ringing performed on handbells and other instruments by: the Bottisham Handbell Ensemble; girls, boys and other members of the 1st Little Thetford Brigade; and Fordham Handbell Ringers. The two-hour programme in the candle-lit (and heated!) church will include a wide range of popular, traditional and classical music, rounded off by a mesmerising demonstration of change-ringing on handbells. Refreshments will be available during the interval.

Admission is £4 for adults, but free for under 16's, and tickets are available from Stretham Stores, Peter Binns on 649428 or Jane Dunseath on 649232. All proceeds will go towards the Stretham & Little Thetford Handbell Restoration Appeal.

As well as its excellent six tower bells, Stretham church also possesses a once fine set of 12 handbells cast by John Warner of London, probably around 100 years ago. Unfortunately, however, they are now virtually unringable and in need of total restoration at an estimated cost of £60 - £100 per bell. The newly-restored and gleaming bells will then be used by a Stretham & Little Thetford Handbell Group comprising girls and boys from the 1st Little Thetford Brigade and others of any age from the two villages. If you might be interested in joining the band in the future to learn this fascinating pastime, please contact Peter Binns on 649428 or e-mail peter_at_binns55.freeserve.co.uk. No musical skill or previous ability are required! '

Changes to Safeguarding. Philip George, as Safeguarding Officer for the Ely DA, sends the following information:
'I have been reviewing the association safeguarding policy and related documentation as a result of recent changes in national safeguarding legislation.

The most significant change is in the definition of the supervision of an activity. Changes in legislation means that all those who help with teaching and training under the direct supervision of the authorised (CRB checked) trainer are legally exempt from CRB checks.

The other major change is that the CRB and ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority) will merge from December to become the Disclosure and Barring Service. This means that all CRB checks made through the diocese of Ely will be referred to the barred list to ensure that applicants are not barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.

Andrew Stevens has kindly updated the Ely DA website to reflect these changes. '

Ely DA - annual subscriptions for 2013
Annual subscriptions to the Ely DA for 2013 are now due. As agreed at the Ely DA AGM in May 2010, subscriptions for 2013 are £10 for adults and £5 for juniors with 25% of the subscriptions paid into the Bell Restoration Fund. A Junior Member is defined as someone who is under 18 and in full-time education. Senior Members, that is those who have reached the age of 70 and have been members of the Association for the previous ten years consecutively, are not under further obligation to pay an annual subscription. The age of exemption from paying a subscription was raised from 60 to 70 at the Ely DA AGM in 2009. Anyone who was already exempt in January 2009 remains exempt in 2013 and later years, even if they are under the new age of exemption.

At the ADM, Rosemary Palmer was elected to continue as Membership Secretary, so please send your subscription to her (if you have not already paid it), either individually or via your tower secretary. If paying by cheque, please make the cheque out to 'Ely Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers'. Rosemary's address is 78 Mill Lane, Fordham, Cambs CB7 5NQ.

It is time to start preparing the contents for the Ely DA Annual Report for 2012. If you are aware of changes that are required to the details for your tower in the Ely DA 2011 Annual Report, please can you let me know, either directly or via your tower secretary. This particularly applies to contact details and ringing times.

As always, please pass on any details in this email to Ely District members who do not receive it themselves.

Happy ringing,

Janet Garnett
