'We have a very special day on the 12th of December as it is the centenary of the Taylor's 8 and the
refurbishment of the tower. On this day 100 years ago a peal was rung at 12mins past midday. Mr Taylor, the bell foundry owner, was one of the ringers. That Peal will be replicated at 12mins past midday on this 12th of twelfth of the 12th. In the evening at 7.30. we have a band the ''Colchester Waits'' they are bringing their medieval instruments and will be singing, playing, and reading tracts from the 15th and 16th centaury. Food will be served - tickets £5, children free. The local ringers will ring for about 10 mins during the interval.'
Ely District ADM at Burwell: 5th January 2013
The next District meeting is the Annual District Meeting on Saturday Jan 5th. Ringing at Burwell 2.30 - 4.30, then service, tea and ADM. The tea and meeting will be held in the Guild Hall, located within the churchyard.
District officers and committee members are elected at the ADM, reports and accounts for 2012 are presented and the ringing programme and other details for 2013 are announced and discussed. This year, Dee Smith has to stand down as Education Officer because of other commitments planned for 2013. If you are interested in standing for this post at the ADM, and would like to know more about what is involved, please contact me or any other committee member, particularly Dee (email@example.com) or Sue Marsden (firstname.lastname@example.org), who have recently held the post.
The ADM will include some suggestions from the committee for the future of Striking Features. This was discussed at the committee meeting in November, as requested by the District business meeting in October..
Please do attend the ADM if you can to make your opinions and requests known and contribute to the running of the district. For any more details or information, please contact me.
Ely DA - annual subscriptions for 2013
Annual subscriptions to the Ely DA for 2013 are due in January, and you will be able to pay your subscription at the ADM. As agreed at the Ely DA AGM in May 2010, subscriptions for 2013 are £10 for adults and £5 for juniors with 25% of the subscriptions paid into the Bell Restoration Fund. A Junior Member is defined as someone who is under 18 and in full-time education. Senior Members, that is those who have reached the age of 70 and have been members of the Association for the previous ten years consecutively, are not under further obligation to pay an annual subscription. The age of exemption from paying a subscription was raised from 60 to 70 at the Ely DA AGM in 2009. Anyone who was already exempt in January 2009 remains exempt in 2013 and later years, even if they are under the new age of exemption.
Tower information in the Ely DA Annual Report
It will soon be time to start preparing the contents for the Ely DA Annual Report for 2012. If you are aware of changes that are required to the details for your tower in the Ely DA 2011 Annual Report, please can you let me know, either directly or via your tower secretary. This particularly applies to contact details and ringing times.
Secretary's report for the Ely District
I don't want to bore you with details of the District Secretary's activities during the year, but once the December ringing meeting is finished, writing the secretary's report for the current year rises rapidly up the to-do list. This year, we set out to ring at as many towers in our district as possible for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, and ringing for the Olympics gained in momentum as the event got closer. So I would like to record a summary of what was rung in our district in this year's report. I have the details collected by Sue for the July issue of Striking Features, and also the information sent to Dee about ringing for the Jubilee. I can also see ringing recorded for the Olympics and Paralympics on Campanophile and on Bellboard. But if there has been any ringing which you know about and is not recorded in any of those places, then please let me know.
As always, please pass on any details in this email to Ely District members who do not receive it themselves.
Happy ringing, and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year
Ely District Secretary
