Dear All,

First of all, Happy New Year, and best wishes for 2012. Here is the first online update of 2012 with some dates for your diaries and other information.

The ringing programme for the Ely District was presented at the ADM on Jan 7th, and a paper copy is on its way to every active tower in the district. Please let me know if you would like another copy; I can send a paper one, or I can email an electronic copy of the programme if you would like it in that form. The full list of monthly ringing meetings is included at the end of this email. The format of meetings for 2012 follows a similar pattern to 2011 since that seemed to work reasonably well. The start time of the meeting does vary from one month to the next, and I will try to provide the up-to-date information for the next couple of months in each online update.

You will see that the district outing is on the second Saturday of April this year, as the first Saturday falls in Holy Week. Business meetings will be held as part of the June meeting (with the Striking Competition) and as part of the October meeting, which also includes a Harvest Festival service. District committee meetings will be held before the ringing meetings in March and October.

The next district meeting is on 4th February: ringing at Fordham from 3 - 5 pm, then tea. The following district meeting is on 3rd March: ringing at Wilburton from 2.30 - 4 pm, ringing at Haddenham from 4 - 5.30 pm, then tea at Haddenham.

8-bell ringing: During 2011, the 8-bell quarter peal attempts were reasonably well supported and, in 2012, Roderick Johnstone as Assistant Ringing Master proposes to continue to arrange 8-bell quarter peal attempts on the 3rd Saturday in the month in a similar format. The ringing will be arranged for the morning, afternoon or evening as convenient for the tower and the ringers.

There will be an 8-bell quarter peal attempt on 21st January 2012, hopefully at Histon but this is to be confirmed. Roderick has set up a Doodle poll on http://doodle.com/54iiwy89tps4dxsd where you can indicate your preferred time for the quarter peal. Ringing for the Diamond Jubilee: the District committee suggested, and the ADM agreed, that we should ring at as many of our district towers as possible to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The official celebration is on Tuesday 5th June, which is a Bank Holiday, and this should be the main focus of our ringing but ringing could also be arranged any time during or near to that week depending on availability of ringers and bells. For example, there could be general ringing on Tuesday 5th June and a quarter peal attempt on another day in the week. Dee Smith will coordinate ringers and ringing, so please contact Dee (dee.fsmith@ntlworld.com) if you need some extra ringers for your tower or to tell her what is planned.

Ringing for the Olympics: the ADM agreed that we would not have a district-wide focus on ringing for the Olymipcs but any ringing by individual towers would of course be welcomed. The Olympic torch travels through our district on Sunday 8th July on its way from Cambridge to St Ives, so this might be a suitable occasion for ringing in the towers close to its route. This is to be discussed at the District Committee meeting on 3rd March.

Annual subscriptions to the Ely DA for 2012 are now due. As agreed at the Ely DA AGM in May 2010, subscriptions for 2012 are £10 for adults and £5 for juniors. A Junior Member is defined as someone who is under 18 and in full-time education. Senior Members, that is those who have reached the age of 70 and have been members of the Association for the previous ten years consecutively, are not under further obligation to pay an annual subscription. The age of exemption from paying a subscription was raised from 60 to 70 at the Ely DA AGM in 2009. Anyone who was already exempt in January 2009 remains exempt in 2010 and later years, even if they are under the current age of exemption.

At the ADM, Rosemary Palmer was elected to continue as Membership Secretary, so please send your subscription to her (if you have not already paid it), either individually or via your tower secretary. If paying by cheque, please make the cheque out to 'Ely Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers'. Rosemary's address is 78 Mill Lane, Fordham, Cambs CB7 5NQ.

The only change in officers made at the ADM is that Dee Smith takes over from Sue Marsden as District Education Officer. The full list of District Officers is:

At the ADM, it was agreed that the District Comittee should consist of specified District Officers (President, Secretary, Ringing Master, Education Officer, Diocesan Committee Members, Central Council Representative and Bell Fund Trustee) plus sufficient committee members, of whom one should be a junior if possible, to bring the size of the committee to twelve members. This change gives us a consistent size of committee even if, as this year, two people each hold two District Officer posts. As a result, we had vacancies for six committee members this year and the following people were elected: Peter Binns, Geoff Grayton, Roderick Johnstone, Rosemary Palmer, Simon Smith and Wendy Smith.

Information for the 2011 Annual Report and Handbook for 2012 is now being collected. Please check the details for your tower let me know of any changes by January 26th at the latest - this is particularly relevant to the information about ringing times and the tower secretary's contact details.

Training events: we have a new District Education Officer so please contact Dee Smith (dee.fsmith@ntlworld.com) with any requests or suggestions for training events.

Striking Features: Sue Marsden, as editor, hopes to have the next issue of Striking Features ready for distribution at the March meeting. Please send her any contributions for publication by mid-February..
